The MHEV system powers the starter, alternator, power steering, MMI, computer, and fans to allow for the smooth starts and coasting that the older start-stop systems couldn't do. In 48V guise, it's also powerful enough to keep the car coasting, but the 12V one is not. This video does a pretty good explanation of how it behaves.
